EVENT DETAILS:

Friday Night and the lights are low, looking out for a place to go..thABBA ca DABRA Ball, Presented by BD, a midsummer’s eve celebration on Friday, August 4th, 2023 invites you to fete international guests of honor, the Swedish Polo Team in one of Newport's most illustrious Gilded Age mansions, Marble House, for a celebration of summer like only Norsemen do - where summers are shortest, with all night to celebrate!

"This is the pinnacle of our summer, that many of us look forward to all year,” expressed Dan Keating, gala MC, Polo captain and Club President. “After two consecutive record-setting fundraisers and 22 years with the most lively party goers under one roof, we are excited to assemble for an odyssey with the Swedes for our next mission, and make this event our next success.

Mamma Mia, here we go again...Our MC and Gala Ambassadors will receive nearly 400 generous and fun-loving epicureans from our polo community to make a red carpet entrance for the annual sell-out black-tie affair, one of the summer's most anticipated social events, to support a worthy beneficiary serving our community, with the timeliest need of our support.

“BD is proud to support this charitable initiative and give back to the community that we’ve been a part of for over 100 years,” stated Kevin D. Kelly, Worldwide Surgery President, BD.  For over a century, BD’s Surgery Business Unit, with headquarters and design center in Warwick, RI, is advancing the world of health, employing nearly 300 associates to distribute over $1 billion in medical devices globally.  To learn more, visit www.bd.com.

So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me, S.O.S?...A portion of ticket sales, and all proceeds from the evening's Live & Silent Auction will make an impact where it is needed most. Nominations from potential beneficiaries are still open for consideration by the selection committee.

Take a chance on me...We'll set out to honor the Swedish Polo Team's mythical arctic circle kingdom of islands and lakes in the Land of the Midnight Sun and City of Bridges, dotted with 1000-year old castles from one of the world’s oldest monarchies. Though not by reindeer, we’ll ascend to the northern most reaches of civilization, to one of the highest standards of living in the world, where sleek efficiency and uncomplicated minimalism, unrivaled coffee culture, crystal clear elixirs and culinary delicacies pair with awe-inspiring spectacles of nature and a deep appreciation of animals, horses above all, that have kindled an environmental consciousness and visionary Nobel science, technology, art and architecture.

Waterloo, knowing my fate is to be with you...The annual gala dress code is black tie formal, corresponding to a novel theme each year. While we don't deny that the fairy tales and mythological spirits of Sweden are absolutely real and traditional to celebrate the midsummer’s Eve - we, my friends will instead turn back the hands of time to clubbing in chic 70’s revival to the era of ABBA in homage to Sweden’s groundspring of iconic music that ranks it Pop Music Capital of the World! Watch for our Fashion Guide to put together your je ne sais quoi, and express your hipster groove and Swedish individualism.

If I had to do the same again, I would my friend, Fernando...a gala Pre-Party to meet & greet the Guests of Honor, by RSVP, will launch the evening's festivities from a favorite Newport destination, to be announced in the coming weeks, followed by the main event at Marble House for sunset ocean views from the lawn & terrace with enticing hors d'oeuvres, ice bar and specialty themed cocktails and a tantalizing Silent Auction of a few dozen select and highly curated exclusives for dueling bidders. As twilight evokes the garden's aurora hydrandealis, guests will delight in a seated 3-course gourmet dinner presentation on the terrace, and whirlwind Live Auction offering up a quintuplet of the night's premier opportunities. The gilded ballroom will come to life with a live band concert for dancing 'til the stroke of midnight, when valeted departures will lay siege to the Skybar, the night's next destination, Newport's VIP summit atop the iconic Clarke Cooke House.

Knowing me, knowing you...With Sweden as one of the highest on the happiness index for its strong economy, good education, and excellent healthcare, let's make a lasting, positive impact together on our cherished community.

About Marble House:  Marble House, one of America’s finest collection of gilded age mansions located on the famed Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, was completed in 1892 as a summer cottage for Alva and William Vanderbilt. Alva Vanderbilt was a leading hostess in Newport society and envisioned Marble House as her "temple to the arts" in America.  Marble House instantly became the social and architectural landmark of Newport, ushering Newport's transformation to a luxury Gilded Age resort.  Marble House was designed by Richard Morris Hunt in the Beaux Arts style. Inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versaille, Marble House was unparalleled in opulence for an American house including a temple-front portico resembling that of the White House, built at a reported cost of $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Today Marble House is a house museum of the The Preservation Society of Newport County.
