Bringing Caribbean flair to this year’s Polo Gala, Newport Polo is thrilled to host the Dominican Republic Polo Team as guests of honor at the Bon Voyage Ball, where they will show us their merengue moves as a warmup to the rematch on the following day against USA. The Gala's proceeds will support the Jeffrey Osborne Foundation in their quest to support organizations that provide food, shelter and a safe-haven for families and children in need as well as protecting music and art education's vital role in public schools.
Hailing from Hispanola, the Caribbean’s #1 port of call since the discovery of the Americas, Dominican players Juan Tomas Diaz, Mauricio Bogaert, Rodolfo Paliza, and Alexander Schad will make their celebrated return to Newport for the weekend-long festivities. Highly accomplished in both business and polo realms, the team makes for exceptional conversation and even better dance partners.
Polo player turned entrepreneur Juan Tomas Diaz got his start in Arena polo in 1996 and swiftly made the jump to the faster grass polo play in 1997. After a hiatus, Juan Tomas returned to the sport in 2016, getting back in the saddle at the Sierra Prieta and Casa de Campo Polo Clubs. He is a founding member of the idyllic Punta Cana Polo Club, which was recently inaugurated in 2020.
Luis Mauricio Bogaert has a unique connection to Newport, as the Dominican born-and-raised player fell in love with the sport in the Ocean State. He first picked up a mallet while studying at Roger Williams University, where he was a founding member of the RWU Polo Team in 2010. After graduation, he returned home to the DR and brought his passion for polo. An accomplished player, Bogaert now plays at the Sierra Preita, Casa de Campo, and Punta Cana Polo Clubs.
Teammate Rodolfo Paliza combines his real estate development experience with his love for the Sport of Kings. Paliza is the founder of the Star Hills Polo Club and the Sierra Prieta Polo Club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Having completed his MSC in Finance at Boston University, Rodolfo is no stranger to New England and excited to be back in Newport.
Last, but certainly not least, true sportsman Alexander Schad will be traveling to Newport from the West Indies. Ever the sports enthusiast, Schad played competitive tennis at a high level before jumping to polo. CEO by day and expert polo player by night, Schad has over 20 years of polo experience under his belt. While a force to beat for the USA players on Game Day, Schad is a great friend and the home team is excited to welcome him at the Gala.
Teeming with talent, the Dominican Republic Polo Team are the perfect guests of honor for the 2021 Bon Voyage Ball. The night will surely be a seaside dream inspired by the team’s island home with exotic libations and top deck décor set to the tune of Dominican rhythms. Fashions will surely be inspired by polo's white trousers to the gala's calling for 'Yacht Formal' black tie attire, it is always a pleasure to welcome the team from the DR!
