Competition Stuffed in 2019 Thanksgiving Tournament

Date:    Monday, December 2, 2019

Newport Polo's 7th annual Turkey or Feathers Thanksgiving Tournament drew five teams to work off the Thursday feast in friendly competition.  The much-anticipated weekend tournament is a regular highlight of the autumn arena polo season when club members and advanced players can continue to hone their game after summer grass polo ends.  Participants included members of the USA/Newport home team, players from the polo school, intercollegiate players and Newport's Interscholastic Girl's Polo Team.

Semi-finals kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 30th as each team vied for a berth in the Championship. TD Bank (green), Kinsella Building (black) and Synergy Solutions Today (white) faced each other in round-robin format for game one. Synergy Solutions Today had two decisive wins to earn the first seat in the Championship.  Next up, Newport (red) overcame the Galloping Grooms (navy), to earn the second position in the Championship.

The following day, the teams returned to contest the Consolation and the Championship amid the swirling snow of a wintry New England storm.  The round-robin consolation began with TB Bank taking a one goal win over Kinsella Building.  Then, strong offensive by the junior Galloping Grooms overcame Kinsella Building and TD Bank to take the bronze medal finish.  Finally, the four chukker Championship for the prizes and glory got underway with Synergy Solutions Today against Newport.  Newport set the tone of the match with four goals in a row, plus a penatly conversion to jump to a 5-0 lead.  Synergy Solutions Today slowed the advance but didn't hit its stride until the final chukker.  Newport had already pulled too far ahead to catch, taking the prizes and last bragging rights in the autumn tournament season.
