Saturday, September 19th, 2020 at 4pm: Season 29 of the Newport International Polo Series will feature the New England Challenge on Saturday, September 19th, 2020 at 4pm in a Battle of the Sexes.
With optimum conditions expected for the heated rematch this Saturday in the penultimate rematch, the Newport Women taking on the Newport Men will not disappoint," explains Dan Keating, Polo Series Founder. “This will be the 4th time in our history that we've lined up a Battle of the Sexes, and it has become the players' most-awaited annual tradition.”
In 1993, the Newport International Polo Series staged its original Battle of the Sexes in a fundraising campaign for endangered species, with celebrity polo players including an all women's team from California led by actress Stephanie Powers, and Ron Ferguson among the male notables. The large crowd on hand also witnessed the famous Cheetah Run across the polo field.
Door Prize Drawing: attendees are encouraged to submit door prize raffle entries by the end of halftime, for a chance to win a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne.
Best in Show: Back by popular demand in 2020, the world's #1 Belgian beer - Stella Artois, is toasting the most spirited Newport Polo fans every Saturday in the Stella Artois Best in Show contest. Guest Judges will scout the venue to find the best bacchanal and award a coveted prize and Jumbotron moment of fame. Our resident style photographer will capture festive parties, including attire, picnic decor & banquets, and tablescapes; curated images will be published on the party pages of Boston Common Magazine, the region's premier luxury/fashion/lifestyle glossy! This tradition is a tribute to our fans that continue to show their spirit and love of polo, earning Best Tailgating in New England from Yankee Magazine and for making the Newport Polo experience par excellence. Souvenir portraits will be available from Cocoa & Co.
Hospitality & Amenities: During the match, the Patio Bar provides beverage service if seated within the Davitt Pavilion, and carry-out service, for specialty cocktails including a Weekly Special created by The Cocktail Guru, premium spirits, boutique wines, imported & craft malt beverages, and soft drinks, for patrons in Lawn seating, while the Veuve Clicquot Cart will be making the rounds around the polo field with champagne & sparkling wine choices. Gourmet food trucks are dishing out popular refreshments including handmade pizza, gourmet hotdogs, kettle corn, gourmet donuts, homemade ice cream, and refreshing shaved ice, while the 2020 limited edition official sportswear collection debuts weekly in the fieldside Pro Shop. See Hospitality & Amenities for details and menus. Expert commentary of the polo action is provided over the PA, and instant replays and live-action are produced on the polo world's first Jumbotron. A half-time intermission will give spectators the opportunity to have a socially-distanced and masked stroll across the playing field to replace divots, a time-honored polo ritual that helps restore the field for the second half.
Closing Ceremony: After 6 periods of competition, called chukkers, the match will conclude with the Newport Polo Fan Salute around the perimeter - a salutatory tradition originating at the Newport International Polo Series in 2003 and now emulated at polo clubs around the world, and the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation awarding the winners' trophy.
The match will be witnessed by a limited live spectator audience in one of this season's rare 17 matches, still the only attended sporting event in New England since the start of the pandemic.

Polo, since 600 b.c. Polo is, without doubt, the oldest ball game in the world today. First recorded in the 6th century b.c. when the Turkomans beat the Persians in a diplomatic tournament, the alluring game caught on with equestrian royalty and cavalry, and took off with globalization, withstanding the tests of time. By the time Polo arrived on Newport’s shores during the Gilded Age, the sport was nearly 2500 years steeped in tradition, captivating newcomers like Newport's summer sporting set who embraced the new pastime, establishing America's first polo club in 1876. A charter member of the United States Polo Association the club today is still a trailblazing model polo club, hosting the Newport International Polo Series public exhibition matches, supporting philanthropic causes, organizing tournaments, polo club member services, and polo instruction year-round. Experience the king of games in its American landing at Newport Polo.
