The crisp autumn air under the warm September sun served as the perfect weather for the match between Newport and Baltimore on Saturday, September 7th in the Newport International Polo Series XXVIII, presented by Brahmin. Newport hit the ground running in the first half until Baltimore got its footing, surpassed the home team and finished the match with a score of 10-8.
Representing the capital of Maryland in white for Baltimore in the #1 position was Yiming Xing with Claudio Barrientos in the #2 position, George Hempt in the #3 position, and his father, Max Hempt at #4. Representing Newport in the #1 position was Tim Day, with Minnie Keating at #2, Sam Clemens at #3, and Dan Keating at #4.
Newport began the first chukker with a goal from M. Keating. The home team continued its advanced in the second chukker, with a goal each from Day and Clemens. Then, G. Hempt put Baltimore on the scoreboard to end the 2nd chukker 3-1 in favor of Newport. Baltimore forged ahead in the third when Barrientos managed to hit one in followed by a second goal for G. Hempt closing the first half at a tie of 3-3.
Not a single goal was completed in the fourth chukker. M. Keating brought it back for Newport with a goal to briefly re-take the lead in the 5th chukker. Barrientos answered for Baltimore, followed by another goal from G. Hempt and another still from M. Hempt. D. Keating broke Baltimore's flow with a goal for the home team, but M. Hempt had the last point to end the chukker 7-5 for Baltimore. G. Hempt began the 6th chukker furthering the Baltimore lead. M. Keating replied with a goal for Newport, followed by another from D. Keating. Newport was trailing by just one point until G. Hempt reinforced Baltimore's lead with another goal. M. Keating attempted to bring Newport back with one last goal, but M. Hempt scored the final goal of the match, securing a 10-8 win.
The match concluded with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation. Commemorative prizes and the perpetual liberty bowl were awarded by Nicholas J.A. Colquhoun-Denvers, the past president of the Federation of International Polo and former chairman of HPA and HAM. An autograph signing to meet the players followed the trophy presentation.
During the match, a lucky woman from Mattapoiset, MA won a magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champagne in the weekly door prize drawing, and an automatic entry into the Turkish Airlines Grand Prize Drawing at the Finals to win a trip for 2 anywhere in the world! Also, during the match, the Stella Artois Tailgate Contest awarded a fabulous prize to a spectacularly decorated party of spectators.
