The crisp, cool August afternoon gave way to a high stakes battle between Newport and New York for the Clarke Cooke Cup on Saturday, August 24th in the Newport International Polo Series XXVIII presented by Brahmin. Aptly named, the team from the Empire State capitol conquered Newport once again, 12-7 in a 6 chukker match.
Representing New York in navy blue in the #1 position was Margaux Buchanan with Slaney O'Hanlon at #2, Esteban Scott at #3, and Keith Hart at #4. In red for Newport was Jenna Davis and Laurel Howe splitting the #1 position with Minnie Keating at #2, Dan Keating at #3, and Rory Torrey at #4.
Following the introduction of the teams, the crowd and the players stood in unity watching as the American flag rippled high to the tune of the national anthem.
Torrey opened the game with a goal for Newport early in the 1st chukker. The thrill for Newport didn’t last long. Scott responded with a goal for New York, then another by O’Hanlon. Buchanan hammered it home to end the first chukker with a 3-1 New York lead. Torrey came back blazing for Newport at the start of the 2nd, tying the game 3-all. Before the chukker ended Buchanan scored once again tipping the scales for a 4-3 New York lead. Scott scored another two goals in the 3rd chukker closing the 1st half with a New York lead of 6-3.
Newport came on strong again after half-time. Davis racked up two points while Torrey nailed a penalty conversion to tie again, 6-6. Scott replied with two goals for the New York team turning to score to 8-6 at the end of the 4th. The New York juggernaut kept grinding on as two goals from Scott increased New York's lead. One goal from Torrey brought Newport a little bit closer ending the 5th chukker 10-7. Scott made a relentless pursuit for the win, scoring on a penalty then another during regulation play to seal the win, 12-7, and hold on to the Clarke Cooke Cup for another year.
The match concluded with the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast & Trophy Presentation. Commemorative prizes and the perpetual Clarke Cooke Cup bowl was awarded by Peter Barry, a special guest of the iconic Newport restaurant, the Clarke Cooke House. An autograph signing to meet the players followed the trophy presentation.
