Newport Polo Club members and students of Newport Polo’s training program mounted up for the Players Tournament, an annual highlight of Newport Polo’s awards weekend.
Crisp, sparkling Autumn sunshine provided the backdrop for friendly competition between the six teams on Saturday and Sunday. Day 1 featured two brackets of competition:
Bracket One: FLOWERS' Jenny Elkus, Patrick Quigley and Clark Curtis/Meg Stowe faced AVALON FARM's Margaux Buchanan, Lauren Bilsky and Stefanie Boyer and NEWPORT POLO SCHOOL's Catie Reed, Ryan McNeilly and Minnie Keating for a spirited round-robin competition against each team. Each team played two chukkers against each opponent, and the best record advanced to the Final, second-best record to the Bronze and third place finisher to Sunday's Consolation round. NEWPORT POLO SCHOOL had the 1st place finish with 2 Ws, AVALON FARM took 2nd place with 1 W, and FLOWERS came in third.
Bracket Two: MAPLE TREE's Matt Janik, Andy Janik and Carol Hottenrott faced USPA's Peter Jenkins, Roger Souto and Luke Merrick and JAI ALAI's Eric Schneider, Amy Garrison and Hamish Wates for the afternoon round-robin competition, with each team playing two chukkers against the other, and the best record advancing to the Final, second-best record to the Bronze and third place finisher to Sunday's Consolation round. JAI ALAI had the 1st place finish with 2 Ws, USPA the 2nd place with a W and an L, and MAPLE TREE came in third.
The tournament adjourned for the evening to take the festivities on to the Clarke Cooke House for Newport Polo Club’s annual awards dinner where players, sponsors, and friends were honored for their contributions and achievements throughout the season. Players Dinner
Competition resumed on Sunday for Day 2, to determine the Champions, Runners up, Bronze finisher and team rankings, with the following results:
Consolation: FLOWERS 15 MAPLE TREE 5
Bronze: AVALON FARM 14 USPA 15
Final: NEWPORT POLO SCHOOL 19 JAI ALAI 12
