The NBC10 Newport International Polo Series, Presented by BMW featured a heated rivalry between Newport and Palm Beach, with Newport hoping to tie up the victory record on Saturday, July 29th.
Representing Palm Beach, in the #1 position was Khalid Dasuki, playing #2 was Jennifer Williams, Chip Stiegler was at #3, and playing #4 was George Krabbe.
Representing Newport, Brendan Tetrault was at #1, Sam Clemens was #2, Carlos Maldonado played #3, and Sam Shore played position #4.
The battle began as soon as the clock started ticking, both teams going back and forth with goals throughout the first two chukkers, bringing the score 5-4 withNewport in the lead going into the third chukker.Palm Beach started off the third chukker with a goal scored byKrabbe, butNewport answered with two goals scored by Maldonado, a score of 7-5 with Newport in the lead going into halftime.
Newport started off the second half with a goal scored by Shore, but Palm Beach answered with two goals scored by Dasuki, bringing the score to 8-7 with Newport holding onto the lead. Krabbe started off the fifth chukker with a goal for Palm Beach but Newport answered with two goals scored by Maldonado and Tetrault, bringing the score to 10-8 with Newport in the lead going into the final chukker. In the final chukker, Newport took control in the final chukker with two goals scored by Maldonado bringing the final score to 12-8 with Newport as the victors.
During the match, the door prize drawing of a genuine leather handbag by Brahmin was awarded to one lucky attendee from Rhode Island. An elegant polo themed tailgate with a delicious spread of food and drink won the Best Tailgate Picnic Trunk from Stella Artois.
The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Dominican Republic and the debut of Peru, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September. This is the 26th season of Newport International Polo Series, which has hosted teams from over 30 nations including, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Egypt, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Nigeria, Portugal, New Zealand, Barbados, Scotland, South Africa, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco, and Morocco.
Minutes from downtown Newport, the International Polo Grounds are located at historic Glen Farm, 250 Linden Lane (off of Rte. 138) in Portsmouth, RI.
