Newport Polo Mourns Loss
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Dennis Mikolich on Monday, Nov. 28. Dennis has been an up and coming player with our polo club for the past 6 seasons, along with his son Jonas. According to his family, polo changed Dennis' life, as he embraced the sport with a passion and made it a part of their family life, often playing together and traveling on polo trips together. If he wasn't on the field himself, Dennis was proudly cheering on his son, and sought opportunities to play together as father and son on the same team. He was also a foremost host when it came to hospitality in receiving the visiting international teams.
Dennis will be remembered for his friendly, good nature, kindness and generosity by all that new him. He was an example of selflessness and modesty, despite vast learning, intellect, multi-lingual and many interesting talents. Last summer, out of gratitude and compassion towards his Chilean hosts who endured a devastating earthquake, Dennis created a donation for the polo gala's auction, that handsomely benefitted not only the auction beneficiary but also our dear friends in Chile. Just Sunday, he wrote to me that he appreciated everyone's help in getting the project accomplished, and that he already had some good ideas for fundraising next summer.
Dennis was a deeply devoted husband and father, and is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Simone and son Jonas. The family has arranged a memorial service at noon on Friday at Central Congregational Church in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, at 296 Angell Street, Providence RI 02906 · (401) 454-5797.
