Ireland is set for a whirlwind tour to see the best of the City by the Sea in just a few short days. The jam-packed itinerary starts with the team's arrival on Thursday, July 7th, and includes all of the Newport must-dos, plus special access to once-yearly events. Follow their exploits on Newport Polo's Facebook page, or better still, put on your brogues and join the players' adventure.
The Irish contingent will touch down just in time for a friendship tournament with Team USA. The prohibitively high cost of transporting horses overseas means the players will be on borrowed mounts, and this will be the only opportunity to get to know their fellow equine athletes before the Saturday contest. Friendships that have survived the test of time and distance will be rekindled as both sides take up mallets to share the camaraderie of the field. A field-side barbecue will gather players to swap stories of their polo exploits, rounding out the evening before the horses are whisked to their stables and Team Ireland returns to its headquarters as guests of a gracious Newport host and Vanderbilt International Properties.
After some much-needed rest, Team Ireland will be free to explore all of Newport's treasures, and no better way to see them than with a personal guide in the comfort of a luxury motorcar with Newport Jaguar Tours. Choices for their afternoon excursions include a stroll through the Newport Mansions, Audrain Automobile Museum, and scenic Cliff Walk. A costume change to join the royalty and yachting stars, captains of industry and charming scalawags at the quintessential Newport destination, The Clarke Cooke House, will reunite with USA once again for the much-anticipated team dinner and a valiant effort by each side to wear out their competitors before the big match.
A relaxing morning on the beach, leisurely downtown brunch, or an early sailing trip all await to set the players at ease ahead of the grand challenge at 5PM for USA vs. Ireland in the Newport International Polo Series, Presented by Turkish Airlines. The skilled horsemen always prove tough adversaries for Team USA, with nearly double the wins to Ireland's credit over USA in recent Polo Series history. Meanwhile, field-side, Newport's own celebrity chef to the stars, Kevin Des Chenes, will tempt even the leprechauns from their pots of gold with a mouthwatering Irish mixed grilled offered during the match or Après Polo with the players by advanced RSVP. The craic will hit 90 when the DJ strikes up the dance music and a complimentary toast with signature libations by The Cocktail Guru in the Modern Luxury Lounge salutes the titans of the field for their valiant efforts.
Evening departures will leave Team Ireland the chance for a final hurrah, starting with a morning concert at the acclaimed Newport Classical Music Festival. Courtside seats for the qualifying rounds of the Hall of Fame Open will send the players off on a high note as they carry fond memories, and possibly the perpetual cup once again, back to the emerald isle.
Make your plans to enjoy the same VIP weekend in Newport, and maybe you'll even catch up with Team Ireland on their excursions.
Though not included on Team Ireland's whirlwind itinerary, these Newport attractions are not to be missed.
