France made its highly anticipated return on Saturday, June 17th, in the NBC 10 Newport International Polo Series, presented by the Rhode Island BMW Centers.
Representing France, in the #1 position was Estelle Wagner, playing #2 was Ninon de Salve, team captain Liz Parker Girard was at #3, and playing #4 was Team Captian, Olivier Girard.
For USA, Team Captian Dan Keating was at #1, Minnie Keating was #2, Heather Souto played #3, and Jim DeAngelis played position #4.
The first chukker of the match started off with goals on both teams, scoring for Team USA was DeAngelis and scoring for France was de Salve. Team USA dominated the second chukker with one goal from D. Keating and two goals from DeAngelis. Team USA continued their momentum from the second chukker into the third with Souto scoring one goal and DeAngelis scoring another two goals. The score going into halftime was 7-1 with Team USA forming a strong lead.
The second half of the match started off with goals from both teams, Wagner scoring one goal for France and DeAngelis scoring another two goals bringing the score to 9 - 2 in favor of USA. The French team kicked it into overdrive in the fifth chukker with Wagner scoring two goals, L. Girard scoring one goal, and O. Girard adding a goal. Going into the final chukker the score was 9-6 in favor of USA. The final chukker started off with a goal for France by de Salve and a goal for USA from Souto, and a bell ringer by Wagner, but it was not enough to change the lead. USA won the match with a score of 10-8 and tieing the series with three wins per team.
During the match, a lucky winner from Kansas took home a magnum of Veuve Clicquot Champagne in the weekly door prize drawing. A fun and creative tailgate party brought the French Open tennis classic to Newport Polo by recreating Roland Garros Stadium on the sidelines and had a mini tennis game going on throughout the match, to win the Best Tailgate Picnic Trunk from Stella Artois. Following the match, Miss Rhode Island United States, Ruth Orevba, presented gifts to the French team, and the 1993 USA vs. France silver bowl to USA during the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast and Trophy Presentation. Diva, a chestnut gelding owned and trained by Carlos Maldonado, was named Best Playing Pony. The 6-chukker match concluded with an après polo Louie Louie party with music and an authentic French banquet of specialties.
During the team's visit to Newport, they enjoyed many of the best attractions and highlights in the City by the Sea. The team toured the famed Newport Mansions, enjoyed helicopter tours with Birds Eye View, paddle boarded and surfed with Island Surf & Sport, played tennis on the legendary courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, sailed on 12 meter racing yachts with America's Cup Charters, enjoyed fine dining at the new sensation Scarpetta, and lodging at Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina, for easy access to all the great attractions that Newport is renown for.
The Polo Series will feature 8 international teams this season including France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Dominican Republic and the debut of Peru, as well as 5 City Teams from major US cities and a few top regional rivals for an action-packed season through the end of September. This is the 26th season of Newport International Polo Series, which has hosted teams from over 30 nations including, Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, France, Egypt, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Nigeria, Portugal, New Zealand, Barbados, Scotland, South Africa, Hungary, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Kenya, Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Singapore, Monaco, and Morocco.
